The Unresolved Edge — A Deeper Look at Tension as a Creative Tool

There is a moment in making any piece where resolution becomes available. Where the composition could close — where every element could be brought into balance, every edge clarified, every tension neutralised. The most interesting decision in contemporary abstract digital art is what happens at that moment. Whether to take the resolution that's on offer — or to leave something deliberately open.Choosing to leave it open is harder than it sounds. And it changes everything about what the finished piece does.Tension as a Structural ElementIn contemporary abstract digital art prints, tension functions as a structural element in the same way that geometry or colour does. It is not an accident or a side effect — it is something that can be designed, introduced deliberately, and calibrated to do specific work within a composition. The most common form of tension in my work is the relationship between hard and soft. A geometric edge — precise, architectural, definitive — meeting a watercolour wash that refuses to stay within the boundary the edge implies. The geometry says: here is a limit. The watercolour says: I acknowledge the limit and move past it anyway. That conversation between containment and overflow is a form of tension that the eye reads immediately, even when the viewer can't articulate what they're responding to. Something is unresolved. Something is still in motion. The composition isn't finished with them yet.The Difference Between Tension and IncompletenessThe risk in leaving things unresolved is that the work reads as unfinished rather than alive. The line between productive tension and mere incompleteness is real, and crossing it in the wrong direction produces work that feels like it needed more time rather than work that rewards sustained attention. What distinguishes deliberate tension from incompleteness is intentionality at every other level of the composition. When the structure is solid, the palette considered, and the negative space protected, an unresolved edge reads as a choice rather than an oversight. The viewer trusts that the maker knew what they were doing — and that the unresolved element is there for a reason.Building that trust requires getting every other element right. The tension only works when everything around it is working too.Why Contemporary Abstract Art Lives in the UnresolvedContemporary abstract digital art prints occupy a particular space in the history of abstraction — one that inherits the structural rigour of geometric abstraction and the emotional directness of expressionism, and combines them into something that is neither purely rational nor purely emotional.Tension is what holds those two impulses together. The geometric structure provides the rational foundation. The watercolour layers introduce the emotional register. And the unresolved relationship between them — the places where geometry and fluidity meet without either fully winning — is where the contemporary quality of the work lives.A piece that resolves that tension completely becomes either a geometric exercise or an emotional expression. Leaving it unresolved keeps it both simultaneously. That duality is what gives contemporary abstract digital art prints their particular character — and why they continue to reward attention long after the first viewing.Calibrating the Amount of TensionNot every composition needs the same amount of unresolved energy. Some pieces call for high tension — multiple unresolved relationships that keep the eye moving constantly. Others require only a single moment of deliberate irresolution within an otherwise settled composition.Calibrating that level is one of the more intuitive aspects of the process — something that comes from accumulated experience with how compositions behave rather than from any formula. The question is always the same: how much aliveness does this piece need? And the answer is always specific to the work in front of you.Getting it right produces a piece that feels exactly as alive as it needs to be — no more, no less. That precision is what I am always working toward in my contemporary abstract digital art prints.Explore the full collection at Phillip J Gordon Digital Art Prints, including the Geometric Abstract Art Series and the Architectural Watercolour Series. For further reading on tension in abstract art, The Art Story on Abstract Expressionism is an excellent resource.— Phillip J Gordon
